The 3 Phases of Death Doula Services

A Death Doula’s work typically involves 3 phases:

  1. Education & planning
  2. Respite care, vigil sitting, death & body care
  3. Grief Care & memory making

Phase 1: Education & Planning

You can be at any stage of health or life to use the services of a Death Doula. You don’t need to wait until you receive a diagnosis or reach old age. It removes a lot of burden from your loved ones if a plan is in place.

Education and Planning can be broken down into the following categories. Here is how I educate and help you plan.

ADVANCED CARE PLANNING

It’s never too late to make a plan! Putting plans in place so that your medical wishes are honored if you are unable to speak for yourself. Legal requirements differ in each state.

FUNERAL PLANNING

I help to organize your final disposition wishes so that they will be honored. If a loved one has died and you feel overwhelmed, I can guide you through the funeral planning process. I am not associated with a funeral home and therefore, I make no income from funeral merchandise. I’m available upon request to be present during the funeral for additional support.

HOME FUNERAL EDUCATIONAL CONSULTATION

For those curious about home funeral practices and legal requirements but not yet ready to organize a home funeral. I educate and guide individuals who are curious about home funerals and/or green burial. You can have a home funeral AND traditional disposition if you wish.

Home Funeral Workshop ($120)

Gather your friends, family or organization and learn about a home funeral. This is a hands-on workshop where you will learn how to create the home funeral environment and care for a body after death for viewing. No deceased involved. Requires 4-6 people. Runs approximately 2 hours.

GREEN BURIAL EDUCATIONAL CONSULT

For the curious about green burial practices but are not ready to organize a funeral.

HOME FUNERAL AND/OR GREEN BURIAL PLANNING

I educate and guide those who desire a home funeral and/or green burial. You can have a home funeral AND traditional disposition if you wish. This includes on call support during the actively dying stages through 24 hours after death.

VIGIL PLANNING

Sitting vigil as death approaches aims to provide comfort in life’s final moments. I help organize visits so the transitioning individual, family and friends are not overwhelmed. I’m available to answer questions about the dying process, including home funerals.

MEMORIAL PLANNING & SERVICES

I can help you plan memorial services for your loved one or to organize your own so that your wishes are honored. I’m available upon request to be present for support or to officiate the service.

Phase 2: Respite Care, Vigil Sitting & Death Care

Most individuals I work with in this stage are receiving hospice or palliative care.

RESPITE CARE SUPPORT

I help put together care schedules, update extended family & friends. I can organize and coordinate additional help for home cleaning, bathing and other services This gives primary caregivers a rest and provides support for individuals who don’t have a support system. I am not licensed to help with bathing and caregiving if that nature. I’m not available for overnight work with the exception of vigil sitting.

LEGACY PROJECTS

I help individuals complete projects that can be left with loved ones. These projects help your loved ones in their memory and meaning making process.

VIGIL SITTING & SUPPORT

I offer support and guidance during the actively dying process. I’m available to answer your questions. During this time I’m on call 24/7 and can be reached by phone, ZOOM, FaceTime or in-person.

HOME FUNERAL, IF DESIRED

As a home funeral guide, I can guide you in care for your loved one’s body at home following death.

Phase 3: Grief Care & Memory Making

GRIEF CARE

I offer Grief Care Services for a year and one day after the death of a loved one. Services include respite care, a listening line and completion of legacy/memorial projects.

CREMATION ART

I create custom abstract art on canvas with acrylic paint and cremains ( both human and furry family members). I capture your loved ones personality with color, texture and movement. The piece becomes a keepsake to honor your loved one.
